TEAHUPO'O

August 31, 2016

We decided to take a drive to the village of Teahupo’o on the southwest coast of the main island of Tahiti. What we discovered was volcanic mountain ranges, natural lava tubes, waterfalls flowing into the ocean and one of the worlds most powerful and intense waves.

We took a ride out with a beautiful local Tahitian couple, Hanui and Maruia. They are the owners of Teahupo’o Adventure. This tour is perfect for those seeking some thrill and wanting to explore the real beauty of Tahiti.

Our first stop of the day was the magnificent reef break of Teahupo’o, home to the Billabong Pro surfing comp. Hanui drove us safely right in line with the break. We were able to see down the barrel of the wave. To feel and watch the sheer power and energy of this wave was an exhilarating experience. It’s not everyday you get to be this close to this beautiful power of nature.

Hanui and Maruia then drove us along the beautiful stretch of coast only accessible by boat. We stopped at a jetty and began to hike amongst the towering palms and tropical scenes. We arrived at a lava tube with water flowing fast through to the ocean. We climbed through to reach a beautiful swimming hole with a full flowing waterfall cascading into it. It was so cool that this was just beside the ocean and so isolated.

After a refreshing swim we continued by boat to the next hidden gem. Hanui and Maruia told us that they don’t usually visit this spot, but we were lucky as it was a calm day which made it accessible. We pulled up about 30 metres from shore and could see a waterfall flowing from the very top of a super high mountain ridge. The bottom of the falls were flowing into the ocean. We jumped into the clear water and swam to a shallow reef. We walked through the water where we came to a small rocky archway which we had to swim under one at a time to access the waterfall. This was fun and challenging at the same time as we had to wait for a wave to carry us through the gap! Swimming in the plunge pool was such a cool experience especially with the amazing views above.

We spent the afternoon snorkelling the reef and chilling with some drinks and fresh fruit! Before heading back to shore we had a dip in the fresh water river and checked out the famous Teahupo’o surf break one last time!

Thanks to Hanui and Maruia for an incredible day. Click here to book your tour with Teahupo’o Adventures!
