MAUNA KEA STARGAZING

September 8, 2016

Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island, is home to the most spectacular sunset and light show. The summit is 14,000 ft and as you ascend the temperature drops dramatically. Joined by two of our close friends, we packed a picnic and some warm clothes and drove 9,000 ft for sunset.

We took a short hike and hung out above the clouds, waiting for the sun to drop. We think the most special part of sunset is after the sun drops below the horizon and the colours begin to change. We watched as it went from orange to deep pink and purple hues. It goes down on the list as one of the best sunsets we have ever watched.

Once the sky slowly turned to darkness we laid down and watched more and more stars slowly appear. The world around us was silent and it felt like we were on another planet. With zero light pollution at Mauna Kea and such a clear night, we were able to see thousands of stars. We experienced countless shooting stars and a vibrant milky way.

Our night spent at Mauna Kea was an unforgettable experience and a memory we will keep forever. This is a special place and if you’re visiting the Big Island of Hawaii be sure to check it out
